My thoughts have been on the topic of "faking it until you make it". This phrase was in one of my reading assignments I was reading today, but it was already on my mind because of my adjustment to being back at school. Social situations are complicated and I'm sure everyone can relate to anxiety related to concerns of "what will people think of me". I admit that this was a great hindrance to me for a large part of my life. While I have overcome major obstacles in my path of true freedom to be myself, I am still not free of it.
If those two weren't enough to get me to want to blog about it (and the fact that it is also a topic in Steal Like an Artist) a friend on facebook shared this video. Once again I can't get the video to work, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpaOjMXyJGk
Maybe this doesn't seem as related as I am making it out to be, so let me explain. "fake it til you make it", a mon avis, means to ignore the social pressures to be someone you are not and pretend to be the person you want to be until you become that person. You (of course I mean 'I', but I feel more comfortable saying you) are not a fake when you "fake it til you make it"; you are simply embracing the true you as you become that person.
Of course this is all easier said than done. A major part of it is your own acceptance of who you are and who you want to be. It is very true that once you accept yourself you no longer rely on the acceptance of others, and (awkwardly enough) that tends to be when you are more accepted. A friend told me that majority of people seek to be normal- I always thought the opposite was true. Sometimes our seeking to be normal leads us to lose the true part of ourselves- I always thought that and always tried to be different (being hipster before it was popular ;), but that too can lead us to not follow our dreams. Trying to be what people expect you to be, what people idolize you as, etc will also keep you from being yourself. Somehow we just have to magically not care about all of that and be our best selves. Then we can 'make it'.
